Monadelphous announced around $145 million of new contracts and extensions. A two year extension of mechanical and electrical maintenance, shutdown and project services at BHP’s Olympic Dam in South Australia. A two year extension of mechanical maintenance and shutdown services at Queensland Alumina in Gladstone, with demolition and power generation added to the scope. Fabrication, supply, installation and commissioning of a dust collector and ventilation system at Rio Tinto’s Paraburdoo mine in the Pilbara, due for completion in the first quarter of 2027.
What sits underneath an extension
A two year maintenance and shutdown extension is a two year calendar of scopes. Structural and mechanical fabrication, scaffold, insulation, electrical and instrumentation, rope access, blasting and painting, crane and rigging, safety supervision and training. The tier one self performs some of it and subcontracts the rest, region by region, to specialists it already knows.
How a scope moves from the announcement to your crew
An extension is announced at the top. Inside the tier one, a package manager turns it into a two year calendar of shutdowns and projects, and resources each one a quarter ahead from a list of specialists they already know. Inside the owner, a maintenance superintendent buys the scopes the master agreement does not cover and decides which specialists are on site regardless of who holds the agreement. That plant level relationship is the one the tier one would rather you did not have, and it is the one that makes a business a partner rather than a phone number. Every scope passes through one of those two people, and both of them plan the first shutdown under a new term within weeks of the announcement.
Why the weeks after an announcement matter
The shutdown calendar and the specialist list behind it are largely set in the weeks after an extension is announced. Specialists already known to the package manager at that point are built into the plan. Others tend to be called in later as overflow, at the tier one’s rates and on the tier one’s timing.
What this means for a fabricator, a crew or a safety provider
The extensions are public and the sites are named. Each one means years of subcontracted fabrication, maintenance, shutdown and safety scopes, with resourcing typically planned in the weeks after an announcement.
